Laval sweeps McGill golf tourney
MANSONVILLE, Que. -- The Laval Rouge et Or made a full sweep of the men's and women's titles in the McGill University Golf Classic held, Sept 11-12, at the Owl's Head Golf Club in Mansonville, Que. The Laval men's team had an impressive one over par total of 577, 15 shots lower than the second-place Montreal Carabins. Trois Rivieres placed third (616) and McGill was fourth (623) in the 12 team competition. The Laval team continued their domination of the women's division with a total of 467 a 16 shot margin over Montreal. McGill was third at 536.
In individual play, Laval's Ugo Coussard shot rounds of 68 and 70 (138). His 6 under par score was 7 shots better than second place JP Cornellier of Montreal and 8 shots better than third place Maxime Merengere of Universite de Quebec a Outaouis, and Julien Marchand of Laval. McGill's Yannick Schuwey was 16th ( 152) and Brian Neill 18th (155)in the 64 man field. Monday's round was the first time in 3 years that all five McGill men's players had scores in the 70's. The Women's winner was Laval's Sabrina Sapone with rounds of 77 and 75, two shots better than her teammate Julie Foster and three shots lower than Montreal's Laurence Mignault. Frederiqe Bovet was McGill's low scorer with a total of 172, one better than teammate Dayvi Khanna .
The third of the four Quebec University Golf Circuit tournaments will be held on Sept 21st and 22nd at the Irish links course of the Ile de Montreal Golf Club. Laval holds a comfortable lead in the overall Men's team standings followed by Montreal and Sherbrooke. McGill remains in fifth position. The Laval women also lead Montreal by some 15 shots with McGill third, but well back.
