Laval licks Redmen in season finale
MONTREAL - Quarterback Benoit Groulx passed for three touchdowns and established a number of conference records on the final day of the Quebec University Football League season as No.1-ranked Laval routed McGill 50-0, Saturday.
The Rouge et Or led 30-0 after the opening quarter and 40-0 at the half in a contest that was played on a windy, rain-soaked day in Montreal.
The loss, combined with Bishop's last-minute 30-28 win over Concordia, left McGill with a 3-5 record and knocked them out of playoff contention for the third straight season. Laval (7-1) will host fourth-place Concordia (3-5) in one semifinal next Saturday, while third-place Bishop's (4-4) will travel to Montreal to take on the second-seeded Carabins (5-3) in the other semi. Sherbrooke (3-5), which was beaten 14-9 by Montreal, finished sixth behind McGill.
"We struggled a lot on offence. It was a tough day to execute, but much of what they did we gave them and that's what bothers you," Redmen head coach Sonny Wolfe told the media.
"Typically, that's what we've done in games we lost this season, letting teams jump out early on us. And against a team like Laval, you just can't make mistakes and do that. But overall, we have to look at things from two perspectives. We could have done a lot better on the season. We're 3-5, could have been 5-3, even 6-2. But we were 0-8 last year and a lot of kids worked real hard to get us to where we're now somewhat competitive. We're not where we want to be, but we've come a long way."
Groulx, a 5-foot-9, 190-pound senior from Montreal, connected on 13-of-15 passes for 230 yards before giving way to understudy Cesar Hernandez-Sanchez at halftime, who rushed for a scoring major.
Groulx became the league's all-time passing leader in TDs with 66, breaking the mark of 63 set by McGill's Matt Connell last year. He also tied the QUFL single-season mark of 18 TD tosses.
Groulx sprayed the ball around 10 receivers, including Maxime Béland of Neuville, Que., who caught three for a game-high 83 yards and two TDs. Béland also added another 52 rushing yards and a TD on five carries.
Quebec City native Mathieu Picard added another TD on Laval's opening drive of the game, which took seven plays. Samuel Fournier of Lacolle, Que., and kicker Christopher Milo rounded out the scoring for the big red machine.
Milo, a junior from Montreal, finished second among league scoring leaders with 73 points and was the QUFL's top punter with a 40.9 average.
Fournier made it 21-0 on a two-yard run at 11:20 of the opening quarter. Milo, who averaged 36.9 punting yards and 60.8 yards on eight kickoffs, added 12 points and was good on both his field-goal attempts, from distances of 25 and 15 yards, respectively.
A safety was also conceded by McGill at the end of the first quarter.
For McGill, rookie quarterback Jonathan Collin had a rough day in trying conditions, completing 14 of 37 pass attempts for 149 yards and three interceptions. He hooked up with senior Charles-Antoine Sinotte of Trois-Rivières, Que., four times for 50 yards, to improve his CIS record receptions total to 199 over four seasons.
One of the few bright spots for the Redmen was defensive lineman Ben Thompson of St. Bruno, Que., who registered a game-high nine tackles, including one of the team's six QB sacks on the day. Anthony Lukca, the fifth-year veteran cornerback who was converted to linebacker this season, was in on three solo tackles and four assisted, including a pair of sacks. The native of St. Laurent, Que., will graduate with 209 career tackles in five seasons, 28 shy of the school record set by linebacker Olivier Lefebvre from 1995 to 1999.
