INDOOR SOCCER: Smith nets pair as soccer squad skunks Stingers

STE. HYACINTHE – Freshman Anna Smith of Somerville, Mass., tallied twice to spark a four-goal outburst in the final seven minutes as McGill clocked Concordia 5-0 in women’s indoor soccer at Ste. Hyacinthe, Saturday.

Cristina Di Caprio, a senior from Laval Que., was named player of the game for the fourth consecutive week. She scored the game-winner in the 24th minute of play and set up Smith’s marker in the 88th minute to put the game out of reach at 3-1.

Shimone Slomowitz of Vancouver, B.C., was called upon to make only a pair of saves to post her third shutout in four games.

Concordia was not match for a superior but depleted McGill side, which was missing star veterans such as Elizabeth Williams, Magalie Kolker, Carolyne Pelletier, Alexandra Morin-Boucher, Vanessa Salasky and Anne-Catherine Huot.

“We had to field almost an entire lineup with first-year players except Sophie Joyal and Hannah Simmons,” said head coach Marc Mounicot. “But the intensity and focus was there for 90 minutes and I’m pretty happy with the result. It was a great opportunity for the younger players to get some experience because we were committed to (splitting our team into two squads) for our Indoor Classic tournament. Our team played a lot of soccer this weekend and they responded very well to the pressure of both competitions.”

The Martlets have scheduled an exhibition game against the West Island Lakers on Mar. 10 at Catalogna Soccerplexe. After that, the McGill women are headed for the playoffs and will meet Concordia on Mar. 15 in a sudden-death contest in the first round. Should they win that, they will no doubt be on a collision course with first-place Laval (7-0) on Mar. 21.
