Harold Épineuse speaks on the French justice system

Published: 29 March 2006

On March 29, Harold Épineuse, chargé de mission at the Institut des Hautes Études sur la Justice, gave a presentation entitled "Justice dans les banlieues : le modèle français est-il en crise?"

The presentation explored the genesis and evolution of the riots that shook France in the autumn of 2005, and the strong measures taken by the State in response.

In his wide-ranging remarks, Mr. Épineuse tied that crisis to the more recent unrest in Paris in March 2006 regarding proposed new employment legislation, to the evolution of the European Union and to the structure of the French judicial system.

Mr. Épineuse was hosted by Madam Justice Georgina Jackson of the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, who is a visiting judge at the Faculty.
