'A Guide to Physical Examination': Streaming videos now available

Published: 15 January 2007

Through collaboration with McGill's Instructional Multimedia Services (IMS), the Library recently put up its first streaming videos. Barbara Bates' textbook, A Guide to Physical Examination, was first published in 1974. It quickly was adopted as a standard tool for training health professionals to assess patients and became recognized as the most comprehensive way to learn and refine physical examinations and history-taking skills. Recently, Bates' Visual Guide to Physical Examination became available as streaming videos, and therefore can be mounted on the Internet.

These videos demonstrate appropriate techniques for assessing patients, providing a visual companion to the textbook, now in its ninth edition (2007). Each video shows approaches to assessment for a different body system. Note that all of these videos are not for the faint of heart. Some are explicit and discretion is requested before viewing in public areas.
