MONTREAL - Five female student-athletes headed for McGill University this fall are among 36 recruitment scholarship recipients, announced Tuesday by the Quebec Foundation for Athletic Excellence.

The McGill scholarships will go to hockey player Mélodie Daoust ($7,000) a 19-year-old forward from Valleyfield, Que., and soccer's Rebecca Green ($3,000) of Green's Harbour, Newfoundland, plus basketball players Dianna Ros ($5,000) of St. Laurent, Que., Shelby Eveleigh ($3,500) of St. Hubert, Que., and Tiye Traore ($3,000) of Sudbury, Ont.

The complete list of bursary recipients, valued at $145,500, also includes 11 freshmen slated to study at Université Laval, eight at Université Montreal, five at Concordia, three at UQTR, two at Sherbrooke and one apiece headed for Université du Québec at Outaouais and UQAM.

"We are proud to confirm that all 10 candidates who have been selected to receive a $7,000 entry bursary have already committed to pursuing their studies in Quebec," said Patricia Demers, director of the bursary program. "It is great news for our network of university athletics programs, which can only be enriched by this class of incoming recruits."

Thirty-two of the 36 bursaries are earmarked for Quebec-born residents and the remaining four, valued at $3,000 each, will go to Canadians from outside the province that have chosen to compete on the playing field for a Quebec-based university.
