EVENT RECAP: DESAUTELS MANAGEMENT LEADERSHIP SEMINAR 2009

Published: 15 March 2009

The Desautels Management Leadership Seminar 2009 was the first of its kind to be sponsored by the TD Fund for Leadership. This year marked the sixth consecutive running of the seminar, which has become the premier Academic event for McGill’s commerce students. First-year Management students participated in this two-day event listening to well-respected industry leaders, competing in a challenging two-hour case competition and networking with fellow classmates.

With support from some of the most reputable firms, the Desautels Faculty of Management Development Office, Faculty members and the student committee, this year’s event was the most successful in exposing first-year students to numerous industry speakers. Over fifteen different guests from a wide range of fields shared their expertise, while Dean Peter Todd and Associate Dean Omar Toulan addressed the importance of leadership at McGill.

From the ‘Big 4’ accounting firms, to the Montreal Allouettes and McGill Desautels Alum entrepreneurs, participants had the chance to see seven different industry speakers and two special key note guests. This year’s key note speakers were Jasmine Tehara (Associate Vice president of TD wealth Management) and Jean-François Courville (President and Chief Executive Officer of MFC Global Investment Management and McGill Bachelor of Commerce Graduate) - both of whom are recognized in the business community for their strong leadership and success.   Ms. Tehara spoke about the importance of self-confidence and meeting challenges while Mr. Courville emphasized integrity and persistence in the business environment.

The participants greatly enjoyed the speakers who attended the event, meeting new students and discussing future opportunities with company recruiters at the wine and cheese cocktail. With just over three years left in their Bachelor of Commerce degrees, the Desautels Management Leadership Seminar 2009 has opened many doors and brought the vast business world a little closer to the Bronfman building for these first-year management students and future business leaders.
