Dr David Eidelman quoted in the Journal de Montréal about family medicine residencies and Bill 20

Published: 23 April 2015

Dr. David Eidelman, Dean of Medicine at McGill University and Chairman of the conference of Deans of the four Faculties of Medicine in Quebec, was quoted this week in the Journal de Montréal. The article briefly discussed the increasing popularity of family medicine, which for the first time filled 424 residency positions, compared to 425 in other specialities. However, this was prior to the introduction of controversial Bill 20. Dr. Eidelman was noted as saying that it will take time to understand the repercussions of Bill 20 on family medicine. See the full article in the Journal de Montréal (in French) for more details.

The Deans of the four Faculties of Medicine in Quebec recently released a position statement on Bill 20 (French only) in late February. This was followed by a position statement by the university Chairs of the four Québec Departments of Family Medicine (original in French, translation in English), including our chair Dr. Howard Bergman, released in mid-March. The position statement highlights the threat that Bill 20 is presenting to family medicine teaching and proposed five possible solutions to improve access to family doctors.
