BIC Prof. Alexey Kostikov offers course on PET radiochemistry in the fall of 2015

The course deals with in vivo ‪imaging‬ using radioactive isotopes and is primarily focused on positron emission tomography (‪PET‬). PET has found research and clinical application in oncology, neurology and cardiology and is an especially powerful modality for imaging of neuroreceptors, cerebral blood flow and abnormal protein deposits in the brain. The course covers most of the topics related to PET from isotope production and radiotracers syntheses to image acquisition and reconstruction. Examples of PET studies of various neurotransmission systems and misfolded ‪‎protein‬ accumulation as well as their implications in various ‪#‎neurodegenerative‬ diseases and ‪‎psychiatric‬ conditions will be explained. Understanding how ‪‎radiochemistry‬, physics and math intermingle with the molecular biology and medicine will result in a deeper insight into the PET radiotracer design and the methods necessary to properly acquire and interpret the data.

Prof Alexey Kostikov

Prof Kostikov received his M.Sc. degree in Chemistry from the Saint-Petersburg State University in Russia in 2001 and completed his Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry at the University of Georgia (US) in 2007. After further post-doctoral training at Syracuse University (2008), he joined the PET radiochemistry group at the BIC as a Research Associate in 2009, and was later promoted to Assistant Professor of Radiochemistry in 2012. Alex currently specializes in setting up the production and quality control procedures of radiotracers for positron emission tomography (PET) in collaboration with neurology researchers. His independent research projects are focused on the application of recently developed copper-free click chemistry for the quick and efficient radiolabeling of biologically active macromolecules such as peptides with the widely used PET radioisotope fluorine-18.
