Controlled tunnel blasting: Lyman Duff & The Neuro

Published: 16 May 2014

Where

In the vicinity of Pine Avenue and University Street at specific times of day over the next several weeks. At the moment, blasting is being done in the parking courtyard of Lyman Duff to create a vertical access to the new service tunnel, which will be blasted out over the coming weeks. There should be little to no effect on the Neuro at this point, while some noise and vibration will be more noticeable at 527 Pine Ave. and 3661 University St.

What

Blasting associated with the construction of a new service tunnel that will run from somewhere near that intersection under the Lyman Duff Building and the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital – the Neuro – to its terminus at the north end of the Neuro. The new service tunnel will provide critical steam and condensate conduits and electrical power.

When

Blasting will take place between noon and 12:15 p.m. and between 7 and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays. No blasting is presently scheduled for weekends.

Blasting will be more noticeable as the blasts are near the surface. Once blasting proceeds horizontally, under the buildings, the blasts will be little more than muffled thuds.

The project is to be completed by February 2015.
