Conformity & Contrarianism paper wins prize

Published: 8 May 2008

Gregory Vit's (Strategy & Organization)paper, "The Multiple Logics of Conformity and Contrarianism: The Problem With Investment Banks and Bankers" has been selected by the editorial board of the Journal of Management Inquiry (JMI)to receive the "Breaking the Frame Award" for the best paper in the Journal of Management Inquiry for 2007.

“This paper", professor Vit explains, "looks at why large organizations are full of very clever people that sometimes do very silly things; and why some manage not to. There is tremendous pressure to conform within organizations, within industries and in the boom and bust phases of a financial bubble. This paper uses theory from these three levels of analysis to explain why the pressure to conform is so great, and why it may be advantageous to understand these forces and be contrarian.”
