CIS TOP 10 TUESDAY (#7) : No. 1 McGill dominant in women's hockey
OTTAWA (CIS) - The two-time defending national champion McGill Martlets top the CIS women's hockey coaches poll for the second time in as many weeks after opening the regular season with a convincing 5-0 win over Concordia, last Friday.
Also leading CIS rankings this week are the Trinity Western Spartans in both women's and men's soccer, the Lethbridge Pronghorns in women's rugby and the Guelph Gryphons in both women's and men's cross country.
In women's hockey, the Martlets (1-0) extended their overall win streak against CIS opponents to 55 games going back to a 2-1 shootout loss to Alberta on Dec. 30, 2007. Alberta holds the CIS record of 67 consecutive overall victories.
McGill, which has been ranked No. 1 in each of the past 31 national polls dating back to November, 2007, will be back on the ice Saturday when they host Ottawa.
The 2009-10 edition of the Martlets is without head coach Peter Smith, who is on sabbatical to coach with the Canadian Olympic team, and three-time all-Canadian goaltender and Olympic gold medallist Charline Labonté, who is also spending the year with the national team. Also lost from the last two CIS championship squads is three-time all-Canadian rearguard Catherine Ward, who graduated last spring and hopes to secure a spot on the Olympic roster.
Rounding out the second women's hockey Top 10 of the season are No. 2-Wilfrid Laurier (0-0), No. 3-Manitoba (0-0), No. 4-Moncton (0-0), No. 5-Alberta (2-0), No. 6-St. Francis Xavier (0-0), No. 7-Guelph (2-0), No. 8-Saskatchewan (2-0), No. 9-Queen's (2-0) and No. 10-York (1-1).
In women's soccer, reigning CIS champion Trinity Western (7-1) remains atop the rankings for the seventh time in as many polls this fall despite suffering its first loss of the regular season last Friday, a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of No. 4-Victoria (6-1-2). The Spartans rebounded on Saturday with a 2-0 shutout of Fraser Valley.
The Montreal Carabins (8-0) were off on Thanksgiving weekend and remain at No. 2 for the seventh straight week.
Rounding out the new Top 10 are No. 3-Ottawa (10-1-2), No. 5-Wilfrid Laurier (8-1-1), No. 6-Queen's (10-1-1), No. 7-Dalhousie (5-0-2), No. 8-Cape Breton (5-1-2), No. 9-Toronto (9-1-2) and No. 10-Manitoba (5-2-1).
In men's soccer, 2008 CIS finalist Trinity Western (6-0-3) leads the coaches poll for the third consecutive week after a 2-1 over Victoria - ranked No. 5 going into the duel - and a scoreless draw against Fraser Valley.
The Montreal Carabins (5-1-1), who enjoyed a bye week, are at No. 2 for the third straight week, while the defending national champion York Lions (6-2-2) move up one position to No. 3.
Rounding out the new Top 10 are No. 4-Dalhousie (6-0-1), No. 5-Alberta (5-1-2), No. 6-Toronto (8-1-2), No. 7-UPEI (5-2), No. 8-UBC (6-3), No. 9-UNB (3-2-3) and No. 10-Guelph (5-4-1).
In women's rugby, two-time defending CIS champion Lethbridge (3-0) tops the rankings for the sixth time in as many weeks following a bye. The Pronghorns, who have outscored their opponents 195-0 in their first three conference outings, host No. 5-Alberta (2-0) on Sunday for their regular season finale.
The 2008 CIS finalist St. Francis Xavier X-Women (5-0) remain at No. 2 for the sixth straight week after outscoring Saint Mary's 32-0 last Wednesday. StFX also travelled to Boston over Thanksgiving weekend and defeated the top-ranked NCAA team, Brown University, 41-7.
Rounding out the new Top 10 are No. 3-Guelph (5-0), No. 4-Laval (5-0), No. 6-McMaster (4-1), No. 7-Western Ontario (3-2), No. 8-UBC (1-2), No. 9-Concordia (4-1) and No. 10-Queen's (4-1).
In cross country, Guelph, which swept the CIS team banners for a record third straight year last November, tops the women's and men's computer-generated rankings for the second consecutive week.
