Burst explodes for 8 points as Redmen slay Excalibur

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. -- Ross Burst, a sophomore from St. Louis, Missouri, scored eight points, including a hat-trick, as visiting McGill edged the Trent Excalibur 11-10 in men's university lacrosse at Justin Chiu Stadium, Sunday.

The win, combined with Saturday's 16-9 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues, improved McGill's record to 2-0 in league play.

Burst, a six-foot, 165-pound management major, was credited with the game-winning tally when his third goal gave the Redmen an 11-8 lead with just under eight minutes remaining.

Two other members of the Redmen notched hat-tricks, including freshman Leland de Langley of Orangeville, Ont., and Alexander Rohrbach, a freshman from West Windsor, N.J.

Rounding out the scoring for McGill was sophomore Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., who scored twice.

Rookie goaltender Riley McGillis of Peterborough, Ont., making his university debut, registered 17 saves for the win.

"I had a hunch that he would come up big in front of his hometown friends and family," said Redmen head coach Tim Murdoch. `He came through big time and so did J.J. Miller, who won 17 of 21 faceoffs, especially some key ones for possession down the stretch."

McGill will now host Trent (0-1) in their home-opener on Sept. 17 at 5 p.m.
