Besse breaks big record but Redmen beaten by Bishop's
MONTREAL -- Ryan Besse of Aurora, Ont., established a McGill record with six goals but it was not enough as the Redmen lacrosse team suffered a bitter 12-11 defeat in double overtime to visiting Bishop's at Forbes field, Thursday.
Mike Dube of Brockville, Ont., who scored three markers, including the game-winner with one minute remaining in the second extra period. Joseph Laleune also netted a hat-trick the Gaiters and added three assists.
Noah Miller of Burlington, Vt., netted a pair of goals for McGill, who also had singles from Mike Ting of Boston, Mass., Alex Kruse of Oakville, Ont., and Brandon McLean of Victoria, B.C.
Bishop's held a slim 3-2 lead after one quarter but McGill rallied for five goals to take a 7-4 lead at the half. The Redmen had a 9-8 advantage after the third stanza before Bishop's tied the game at 10-10.
Bishop's appeared to scored the game winner with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation when Andrew MacKay scored but McGill head coach Tim Murdoch asked for a stick check. MacKay's stick was illegal since the ball could not be dislodged, so the goal was disallowed and McGill escaped with a 10-10 tie heading into the extra period.
The Gaiters were assessed a three-minute penalty and McGill took advantage, going ahead 11-10 but Bishop's rebounded for pair of goals and the win.
Besse beat the previous single-game regular-season record of five, held by Jimmy Daruwalla, Mike Ting and Brendan Simeson. His six goals also ties the club's overall record -- which includes non-conference games -- set earlier this year by Miller who tallied six times in a 24-3 pre-season conquest over Concordia last month.
The Redmen finished regular-season third in the CUFLA East with a 5-5 record and will meet second-place Carleton (8-2) in a quarterfinal playoff on Oct. 30. Bishop's improved to 7-1 and has two games remaining before playoffs. They need just one more win to claim the Eastern Conference pennant.
