Perspectives from the other side, lessons from working in real estate development

Jill Merriman, Live Work Learn Play

Jill Merriman graduated from the McGill School of Urban Planning in 2011. She is currently working as a project manager with Live Work Learn Play (LWLP), a real estate development and advisory firm, dedicated to creating iconic and thriving mixed-use neighborhoods. Prior to joining LWLP, Jill and two MUP colleagues co-founded Made in Montreal, a unique non-profit organization working to promote and support local manufacturing in the City of Montreal.

Since joining LWLP, Jill has been working on a variety of mixed-use development projects in towns and cities of all sizes in the northeastern, midwestern, southern United States, as well as projects in Ontario and Quebec. Her seminar will focus on lessons learned from working for a mission-based private developer, including: market research is important, understanding your customer is key, plans on paper do not equal places, and other lessons from outside of the worlds of academia and the public sector.
