Informality in India's Urban Water System: A Case Study from Bangalore, India

The largely poor and working-class village of Weaver's Colony, in peri-urban Bangalore, relies on a largely informal network of bottled water vendors, tankers, and “micro-utilities” to replace the nonexistent municipal water supply. Building on the work of urban political ecologists and feminist geographers, this talk will draw on interviews with water users and vendors to examine the social, economic and political drivers for water choices in a complex and informal water market and what these networks can tell us about sustainable infrastructure solutions for rapidly changing cities in the global South.

The Urban Studies @McGill Seminar Series invites speakers to present on a variety of ongoing research, projects, and issues related to urban studies. The seminars are hosted and organized by the McGill School of Urban Planning, with participation from the McGill School of Environment, and Department of Geography. The seminars typically run from noon to 1pm on Fridays throughout the semester and are open to students, faculty, and other members of the urban studies group.
