Dynamics of Musculoskeletal Safety: Supporting Mobility & Reducing
Injuries in Older Adults & Care Providers

Edgar Ramos Vieira, PhD
Post-doctoral fellow, Department of Nursing, University of Alberta

Dr. Vieira is completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Nursing, after completing a PhD in Rehabilitation Science in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine on ergonomics and biomechanics. His dissertation was on assessing risks for work-related low back disorders. His post-doctoral project is on mobility and transfer-related falls. Older adults in a variety of geriatric care settings face multiple challenges in regaining and/or maintaining safe mobility and related psycho-social and musculoskeletal health. Their care providers face related challenges in dealing with their workload while preserving their health. In this presentation, Dr. Vieira will outline his evolving program of research on the use of mixed method approaches to understand how to support mobility and reduce injuries in older adults and care providers. Dr. Vieira's future research program will focus on engaging participants and decision-makers in the design and testing of knowledge translation strategies and interventions to optimize mobility and increase musculoskeletal safety in clinical practice and policy.
