Please join us for the second lecture of The LOLA Series: Lectures on Language Acquisition, for parents, clinicians and educators, featuring Dr. Fred Genesee and Caroline Erdos.  The lecture is free and all are invited, but we ask that you register to ensure seating.

Abstract:

“There is a fairly widespread belief, even in a setting like Montreal where lots of kids grow up bilingually, that there are costs associated with learning two languages,” says Dr Fred Genesee, Professor of Psychology at McGill. In extreme cases, says Genesee, people may even believe that bilingualism is the reason that some children are language impaired. Research shows, however, that in appropriately rich learning environments, children learning two languages reach developmental milestones at essentially the same time as children learning only one language.

Dr. Genesee sees the LOLA Series as an important opportunity to share research results with parents, teachers, and others in the local community who might have questions and concerns about bilingual learning and other aspects of language acquisition. By understanding the real issues behind language learning, says Genesee, parents and educators will be better able to support bilingual learning and help those children who do have particular problems with language acquisition.
