McGill on the Move presents "Mini-Med lecture with Dr. Dennis Osmond" - SOLD OUT!
The McGill Alumni Association of Ottawa invites you to hear the inaugural lecture of McGill’s Mini-Med School "Anatomy: Exploring the Incredible Human".
This lecture will be presented by Dr. Dennis Osmond, CM, BSc,
MB, ChB, DSc, MRCS, LRCP, FRSC, Robert Reford Emeritus Professor of
Anatomy
In 2001, McGill became the first university in Canada to offer a
Mini-Med School, a public education program originally created in
1989 at the University of Colorado by McGill alumnus Dr. John
Cohen.
The goal of McGill’s Mini-Med School was to give the public an
understanding of basic medical sciences and an idea of what
students learn in the first two years of medical training. From its
beginning, the Mini-Med School was a success.
In this repeat of the inaugural Mini-Med lecture, Dr. Osmond
reveals the complexity and beauty of the human body by the study of
its structure. He traces the way we have come to know about human
anatomy, through the long and often turbulent history of dissection
to modern imaging techniques. After an overview of the main body
components, he considers the anatomy and function of the human hand
as an example of how structures come together to form a powerful
but delicate and sensitive instrument. Finally, he shows that the
experience of working on the bodies of donors not only provides
students with knowledge that lays an essential foundation for other
medical sciences and clinical specialties, but also promotes
personal development and preparation for a caring medical
practice.
Dr. Dennis Osmond is a highly respected researcher and teacher in
McGill’s Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. He created the
"Anatomy for Surgeons" medical elective in 1977, one of the most
popular and long-standing courses for fourth-year students. He was
named to the Faculty of Medicine’s Honour List for Educational
Excellence in 2000 and received the Osler Award for Outstanding
Teaching in 2007.
