McGill on the Move with Daniel Levitin

Tuesday, February 17, 2009 18:30
326 Galvez Street, 326 Galvez Street, Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center, Stanford, California, CA

Join fellow McGill alumni and friends as one of the University’s best-known researchers, Professor Daniel Levitin, gives a lively and thought-provoking presentation, entitled:

"The World in Six Songs: How the Musical Brain Created Human Nature"

An Associate Professor of Psychology, Behavioral Neuroscience and Music, as well as a bestselling author, Levitin will discuss the complex relationship between music and our evolution as a species. Discover what half a dozen songs can reveal about the prehistoric, yet elegant, systems at play when we dance at a wedding or tune out with an iPod.

Limited parking is available directly in front of the Alumni Center. Additional spaces are located in the lot next to the Track House at Galvez and Campus Drive. Parking is free after 4:00 p.m.

More on Professor Levitin:
Daniel Levitin is a professor, neuroscientist, producer, musician and author. His previous book, "This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession", was a worldwide bestseller. He has been featured on the "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer", in the "New York Times" and "Rolling Stone", and was a weekly commentator on CBC Radio One. As a record producer, he has worked with performers such as Stevie Wonder, Chris Isaak and Santana, earning 17 gold and platinum records in the process. A James McGill Professor of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Music, he is also Director of McGill’s Laboratory for Music Perception, Cognition and Expertise, which studies the science of musical sound from the neural level all the way to our sophisticated emotional responses. His research is spurred by a desire, Professor Levitin says, "to learn where goosebumps come from."
