The McGill Alumni Association of Beijing invites you to a cocktail reception featuring a keynote address by Richard W. Pound, Chancellor of McGill University and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). His keynote address will touch on the following topics:

  • The Beijing Summer Olympics
  • The evolution of the Olympics and its future
  • Drugs and doping in sports
  • Higher education in Canada today

On July 1, 1999, Richard W. Pound, OC, OQ, QC, LLD, became the 17th Chancellor of McGill University, having previously served as Chair of its Board of Governors. As a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 1978 and former Chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency, Richard (Dick) Pound has a lengthy and distinguished sports administration career.

Over the course of his Olympic involvement, Pound has been involved in virtually every aspect of the Olympic Games. He is a longtime Executive Board member and Vice-President of the IOC, where he was responsible for all Olympic television negotiations, marketing and sponsorships. He also has participated in numerous Olympic commissions as a chairman or member, including commissions on eligibility, the study of the Olympics, and the coordination of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

On the national front, Pound has played an active role with the Canadian Olympic Committee, serving as Secretary General (1968-1976) and President (1977-1982) as well as deputy chef de mission of the Canadian Olympic delegation for the Munich 1972 Olympic Games. He also supported Vancouver’s bid for the 2010 Games as a director of the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation.

An accomplished athlete in his own right, Pound has won numerous accolades for his swimming achievements. He was a double Olympic finalist at the 1960 Summer Games in Rome and won four medals (one gold, two silver, one bronze) at the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia. In addition, he won several Canadian national swimming titles (1958 to 1962), which formed the basis of his membership to the Canadian Swimming Hall of Fame and the Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was awarded the Gold Medallion Award by the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
