Faculty Club 3450 rue McTavish, Montreal, QC, H3A 0E5, CA

Lectures are given by some of McGill’s most eminent and engaging academics, and topics range from jazz appreciation to the latest developments in sustainable energy.

You may register for one class within each series. There is no charge for tickets. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Depending on whom you ask, the word jazz evokes vastly different ideas. For some people, it means the big band swing of Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Duke Ellington. To others, it inspires thoughts of smoke-filled bars and the smooth improvisations of John Coltrane and Miles Davis. Professor Gordon Foote will explain how to listen to this incredibly diverse, if sometimes difficult, musical form. To drive home his points, he’s bringing a talented group of musicians to perform jazz standards live!

Gordon Foote is Associate Dean of McGill’s Schulich School of Music and an Associate Professor in its Jazz Studies department, where he was instrumental in creating the first university jazz studies program in Canada. As coordinator of the McGill Jazz Orchestras, he has helped student ensembles release eight CDs and perform throughout North America and Europe. An accomplished saxophonist and clinician, he has served as the Quebec representative to the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE), as Director of Education for IAJE Canada, and as President of Jazz Canada.

Please note that online registration is available until September 16, 2008. After this date, only phone, fax and mailed-in registrations will be processed.
