Graduate Career Month 2013 - Dive into Careers Outside Academia

Grad Career Month 2013 intends to shine a spotlight on a range of career paths that graduate students excel in but may overlook when conducting a job search post graduation.   

We will introduce you to the illusive world of policy leaders and analysts, project management, communication, pharma careers, management consulting, international development and CEGEP teaching through a series of panels, presentations and speed mentoring events. Workshops on negotiation, emotional intelligence, building a LinkedIn profile, managing conflict, strategies for a successful post doc and how to land an internship as a graduate student are some of the events we bring to you. 

The job search process is based on research and networking.  Grad Career Month is a good place to start!

This seminar will be an interactive, fun, and interesting way to learn about negotiations and acquire information that will help you develop your negotiating skills.  Whether it's a salary negotiation, a promotion, acquiring a job, bargaining a deal, learning how to work effectively in a team environment, or networking, you will be called upon to negotiate. Emotional Intelligence Workshop

Research in social psychology has revealed that the smartest people are also the most successful and the most fulfilled in life. Intellectual intelligence (IQ) isn’t sufficient on its own to become successful in life. IQ can help you get into the best university but EQ, will enable you to better manage stress and emotions during exam periods. Therefore, a higher EQ will lead to improvements in your performance at work (i.e. stand out as a strong candidate during a job interview), your physical and mental health (i.e. reducing the likelihood of serious health and mental health problems), and your personal relationships (i.e. to better manage your emotions and to avoid mood swings which can be detrimental to forging significant relationships). By understanding your emotions and how to control them, you will be better able to adequately express how you feel and also understand how others are feeling. EQ will allow you to become a more efficient communicator and hence, to develop stronger relationships, both at work as well as in your personal life.

The afternoon session will consists of two hours of 30-minute small group discussion. Participants will be divided into groups of eight to ten and engage with two established professionals from in the pharmaceutical domain in a round-table format. Coffee and pastries will be served. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about available career options, to gain an insider’s view on the hiring process, and to network with professionals. After every 30 minutes, students will rotate from table to table in order to meet with all the mentors. Our panel of “two-hour mentors” consists of a wide range of professionals with extensive experience in their respective domains.
