Taking Indonesia (the world’s 4th largest country and the state with the largest number of adherents of Islam) as a point of departure, McGill academics and invited guests will discuss the conditions which nourish a fruitful engagement between religions. With the participation of K.H. Achmad Hasyim Muzadi, Leader and Chairperson, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and Secretary General of the International Conferences of Islamic Scholars (ICIS); Prof. Franz Magnis-Suseno SJ, Jesuit priest, Professor of Social Philosophy, Driyarkara School of Philosophy in Jakarta; Prof. Wayan Wita, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman of Maha Gotra Pasek Sanak Sapta Resi (MGPSSR), and Chairman (Social and Culture) Hindu Dharma Council of Indonesia (PHDI); Prof. Bahtiar Effendy, Ph.D., Lecturer, Faculty of Ushulludin and Philosophy, and Professor in Political Sciences, State Islamic University (UIN), Jakarta; Prof. Ibrahim Aburabi, ECMC Chair in Islamic Studies, University of Alberta; and Prof Patrice Brodeur, Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair on Islam, Pluralism, and Globalization at the Faculty of Theology and the Science of Religions, University of Montréal.
