Broadcast — Is there room for ecological conservation in the Oil Sands of Alberta?

Wednesday, August 24, 2011 14:00to15:00

The Cutting Edge lectures are organized to foster communication between scientists in different disciplines as well as between scientists and the public.

The Oil Sands of Alberta present many environmental challenges. This talk focuses on how terrestrial ecosystems and their components can be conserved in this heavily industrialized landscape highly variable. A case study of woodland caribou, an endangered species,  illustrates how powerful land-use planning tools can now give society the information needed to make ecologically informed decisions about how and if conservation and development targets can be achieved.
