Medicine's relationship with society can best be described as a social contract involving mutual rights and mutual obligations between the profession and the society it serves. Professionalism serves as the basis of this social contract, which involves expectations on both sides. There are consequences when either medicine or society fails to meet the legitimate expectations of the other party, a situation which does occur.
