Join fellow alumni for the latest Book to Big Screen event and explore how a literary work is adapted to the cinema. Enjoy a screening of Brokeback Mountain, based on the short story of the same name by Annie Proulx. The story first appeared in the New Yorker in 1997 and an expanded version was included in a collection of her works, Close Range: Wyoming Stories, published in 1998.

McGill history professor Brian Lewis and Concordia alumnus Larry Weller, a retired CEGEP professor of English, will lead the discussion following the film. Remember to read the short story first – and reading the whole collection will lend even more context. The book is available at the McGill Bookstore and a special 20% discount will be offered.

Book to Big Screen is a joint initiative of the McGill Alumni Association and the Concordia University Alumni Association.

About Annie Proulx

Although she didn't start her career as a writer until she was in her 50s, in 1993 E. Annie Proulx became the first woman to win the prestigious PEN/Faulkner book award, for her debut novel Postcards. The following year she won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award for her novel The Shipping News. She is also the author of Accordion Crimes (1996) and several more recent volumes of Wyoming Stories. Now in her seventies, American-born Proulx spends part of each year in northern Newfoundland on a small cove adjacent to L’Anse aux Meadows.
