TISED celebrates 10 years of building a foundation for sustainability

This past June, TISED brought together students, researchers, and donors in celebration of its 10^th anniversary. The Institute, which was established through the vision and support of Ram Panda (BEng’71) and Lorne Trottier (BEng’70), has been driving interdisciplinary research, teaching, and collaborations in sustainability for the past decade. Now the institute is poised to make an even greater impact with the launch of its Master of Engineering: Sustainability in Engineering and Design program this Fall.

Featured at the event were former Dean, Prof. Jim Nicell, TISED Director, Prof. Subhasis Ghoshal, Lorne Trottier, and three students whose academic and professional careers have been bolstered by TISED’s support, Keena Trowell (PhDEng'22), Mohamed Awadalla (PhDEng’24), and Amanda Del Balso (BEng’23). Current Dean, Prof. Viviane Yargeau and Ram Panda were also in attendance.

Trowell recently accepted a position as Assistant Professor at McMaster University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. “There is a straight line between my experience here at TISED and my appointment at McMaster the year of my graduation! Congratulations to TISED for developing such a global and profound reach in 10 years!”

The event highlighted the urgency of addressing the profound environmental challenges our world is currently facing, and the significance of the institute’s work in bringing together experts from across McGill, empowering students, and advancing policies to create a more sustainable future.

In the words of former Dean Nicell, “TISED has become an incredibly important and integral part of the Faculty of Engineering and the University itself. Effectively it’s a foundation stone upon which we will build the next century.”

L’Institut TISED célèbre ses 10 ans au service de la durabilité

En juin dernier, L’Institut TISED a réuni des étudiants, des chercheurs et des donateurs à l’occasion de la célébration de son 10^ème anniversaire. Né de la vision et du soutien de Ram Panda (BEng' 71) et de Lorne Trottier (BEng' 70), l’institut Trottier pour le développement durable en ingénierie et en conception stimule la recherche interdisciplinaire, l’enseignement et la collaboration en matière de développement durable depuis une décennie. L’Institut TISED est aujourd’hui à même de créer un impact encore plus grand, en lançant cet automne son programme de maitrise en génie, nommé « Durabilité en génie et en conception » (Sustainability in Engineering and Design).

Ont participé à la célébration l’ancien doyen de la Faculté, Jim Nicell, le directeur du TISED, Subhasis Ghoshal, Lorne Trottier, ainsi que trois étudiants ayant bénéficié du soutien de l’Institut, Keena Trowell (PhDEng' 22), Mohamed Awadalla (PhDEng' 24) et Amanda Del Balso (BEng' 23). La doyenne actuelle de la Faculté, Viviane Yargeau ainsi que Ram Panda étaient également présents.

Keena Trowell a récemment accepté un poste de professeure adjointe au département de génie mécanique de l’Université McMaster. « Il y a un lien direct entre mon passage à l’Institut TISED et ma nomination à McMaster l’année même de ma remise de diplôme. Félicitations au TISED d’avoir atteint une portée aussi vaste et significative en 10 ans! »

L’événement a fait ressortir l’urgence de relever les graves défis environnementaux qui se posent à notre monde, et aussi la pertinence du travail de l’Institut. Le TISED réunit des experts de toute l’Université McGill, responsabilise les étudiants et fait progresser les politiques vers un avenir plus durable.

Citons le professeur et ancien doyen Jim Nicell: « Le TISED est devenu une part intégrante et essentielle de la Faculté de génie et de l’université elle-même. C’est une pierre angulaire sur laquelle nous bâtirons le siècle à venir ».
