McGill Law ranked 29th best worldwide, up two ranks

Published: 23 March 2023

The Faculty of Law was once again ranked among the world’s top universities at which to study law by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Law and Legal Studies placed McGill Law 29th worldwide, up two spots from 2022.

Since QS introduced the ranking in 2011, the Faculty of Law has consistently placed in the top 35 institutions globally. The QS ranking is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, H-index citations, and citations per paper. McGill Law’s academic reputation was scored the highest in Canada.

This continued success reflects McGill Law’s steadfast commitment to outstanding legal scholarship and pedagogy. The integrated BCL/JD program has become a global model for legal education, attracting some of the world’s best students. Through this bilingual curriculum, law students learn about civil law, common law, and – increasingly – Indigenous legal traditions concurrently, gaining a deeper understanding of law through the dialogue between legal systems. Recognized by their peers around the world for their incredible versatility, McGill Law graduates go on to become Supreme Court of Canada judges, members of Parliament, justice ministers, managing partners, solo practitioners, chief legal officers for multinationals, CEOs, and entrepreneurs.

The BCL/JD program is taught by world-class scholars who are international leaders in their fields. McGill Law professors are sought-after experts, whose scholarship informs contemporary societal debates. Their publications inform courts including the Supreme Court of Canada, policymakers at all levels of government, and international tribunals and organizations.

“I’m thrilled to see McGill Law’s collective commitment to excellence recognized once again in an international ranking,” said Dean Robert Leckey, Ad E. “Our remarkable students, leading professors, and worldwide alumni network are dedicated to contributing their legal leadership to answer pressing global challenges.”
