Congratulations to our Recipient of 2022 McGill Sports Science Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Zachary William Bell

Supervisor: Dr. Tyler Churchward-Venne

Project Title: Estimates of dietary protein requirements in endurance-trained older male and female Master's athletes as determined by the Indicator Amino Acid Oxidation (IAAO) method

Project Brief: The objective of our study is to determine the estimated protein requirements and recommended protein intake in both older (65-80 y) male and female Master's endurance athletes, following an acute bout of endurance exercise, using non-invasive indicator amino acid methods. As opposed to collecting muscle biopsies, this method offers a non-invasive alternative for measuring protein turnover following exercise. Additionally, this project will build upon previous research and allow for continued understanding on IAAO methods, specific to Master's cyclists. There will also be consideration made to comparing changes between males and females.

Sports science is a research initiative within the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education, which aims to improve sport performance by answering research questions that arise in the sporting community.
