Education in the News for Orange Shirt Day
The We Will Walk Together / Skàtne Entewathahìta event began at McGill’s Faculty of Education in 2019, in honour of Orange Shirt Day. The initiative was driven by a small enthusiastic committee that organized a march at Mount Royal to raise awareness and express sentiments of unity and inclusion between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous allies. Despite the pandemic challenges, the annual event went on in September 2020 as a self-guided individual walk, with an accompanying informative podcast, and participants submitted selfie photos of their walk that were compiled and published online. Now, in 2021 the event has grown, adding collaborators from across the University and some local partners. The event will take on the theme of hope and healing, beginning with online segments to share personal stories from Indigenous community members, cultural excerpts, and comments on the role of educators and allies in repairing society.
