Court case against universiy tuition hikes in Quebec | CBC Montreal

Published: 12 March 2024

February 23, 2024 | With the Québec government's decision to raise tuition fees for out-of-province students and change the funding model for international students, McGill has launched a lawsuit, arguing that these measures will violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Québec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. The university is asking the court to issue a stay, which would suspend the application of the two measures while the court considers the challenge. Pearl Eliadis says these arguments rest on well-established principles of constitutional and human rights laws.

"I think it is a tragedy for this province that we are in this situation and that the universities have had to go that last step, which from a legal perspective raises some very serious questions."
