In order to take full advantage of the features of Email on Office 365, IT Services will be replacing our anti-spam quarantine system with Office 365’s anti-spam protection features.

  • August 7, 2017: Student and alumni mailboxes and other accounts of the format will switch to using Office 365 anti-spam filtering.
  • End of September, 2017: Faculty and staff accounts, of the format, will be switched.

How will you be affected?

Direct access to Junk mail folder from Outlook:

Instead of having to go to a separate quarantine website (e.g., to view mail that is filtered as junk, these messages will be accessible directly within the Junk E-mail folder in the Outlook application on desktop, mobile devices and in Outlook on the web ( To recover any mistakenly filtered messages, you can simply drag them back to your Inbox or any other mail folders.

No notifications about filtered messages:

Currently, some people receive a “Digest” of messages that have been quarantined; after the switch, there will be no notifications that messages have been filtered as spam.

Manage Safe and Blocked senders and other filtering options in Outlook:

You will be able to choose the level of spam filtering and manage your lists of Blocked Senders and Safe Senders within the Outlook desktop application and on the web. See Knowledge Base article: Junk E-mail Options in Outlook for Office 365. Note that Blocked and Safe senders designated in the old anti-spam quarantine will not be carried over.

With all spam filtering systems, not all spam is detected, and some may end up in your Inbox; conversely some legitimate messages may be filtered to the Junk mail folder. It is important that you check the messages in your Junk E-mail folder to make sure you are not missing important communications.
