Many mental health campaigns consistently encourage people to spend more time talking(link is external). These campaigns consider talking as a sign of emotional literacy and essential to the development of positive mental health and psychological resilience.

This encouragement to talk is commonly deployed when discussing men’s mental health, where men are frequently stereotyped as self-destructively silent, stubborn and stoical in the face of mental health issues."

Rob Whitley, Ph.D., is the Principal Investigator of the Social Psychiatry Research and Interest Group (SPRING) at the Douglas Hospital Research Center. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University. He has published over 100 papers in the field of social psychiatry, and currently leads numerous externally-funded research projects. One of his primary interests is men’s mental health.
