The McGill Department of Family Medicine presents "Trajectories of lung cancer patients in primary care: from first presentation to referral" by Satya Rashi Khare, MBA, PhD(c)

Ms. Satya Rashi Khare is a doctoral candidate in Family Medicine at McGill University with a research focus on early diagnosis of lung cancer. Prior to this, she completed a Master of Science in Nursing at McGill University and an MBA at the University of New Brunswic. Her career has been focused on clinical performance improvement and the optimization of patient outcomes through streamlined clinical processes and evidence-based protocols. For many years, she led a surgical quality improvement program in a large tertiary care institution and subsequent to this, she led the design and implementation of a rigorous process of performance improvement across three cancer centers in Montreal, Quebec. More recently, she led the creation of standardized pan-Canadian quality indicators in the management of bladder cancer. Satya's long-term goal is to advance patient care, primarily in the field of oncology, through research-based initiatives and knowledge translation strategies.

In this presentation, Satya will present results from the first phase of her mixed-methods study on lung cancer diagnostic trajectories in the primary care setting. A high proportion of lung cancer patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease, leading to very poor survival. The literature points to the critical importance of primary care in early diagnosis, yet few studies have focussed on what happens from first patient presentation to secondary care referral. Using latent class analysis on health care service utilization data from clinical databases and structured patient interviews, two groups of lung cancer patients with similar patterns of care in the primary care setting have been identified. The meaning and characteristics of these groups will be discussed, alongside a complimentary event sequence analysis that further characterizes the groups. Lastly, the next qualitative phase of research will be briefly presented.

This study was conducted at the Peter Brojde Lung Cancer Centre (PBLCC) within the Jewish General Hospital (JGH), with financial support from FRQS and SRAP.
