Pre-Startup Skills: Foundations of IP and Patent Searching

The Engine Centre will be hosting a series of pre startup skill workshops throughout the semester!

Each workshop is from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in the McGill Engine Centre (FDA3)

WORKSHOP LIST AND SCHEDULE 

Workshop #1 – Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship 101 : Jan.15 & Feb.11

  • Overview of the McGill Engine, followed by overview of technological innovation and entrepreneurship, including design thinking and lean startup methodologies

Workshop #2 - Market Research and Analysis of Competition : Jan.22 & Feb.18

  • This workshop will provide an overview of the different types of market research, how to analyze the competition, and the resources available at McGill to perform market research. Our market research librarian Amanda Wheatley will walk us through some of those resources using a new market research canvas tool. Please bring your laptops.

Workshop #3 – Foundations of IP and Patent Searching: Jan.29 & Feb.25

  • This workshop will demystify and explain the various form of intellectual property (IP), namely, patents, industrial designs, copyright, trademarks, and trade secrets. We will then do some actual patent searching with our librarian April Colosimo using the DERWENT worldwide patent database. Please bring your laptops.

Workshop #4 - Customer Discovery: Feb.5 & Mar.10

  • This workshop will provide an overview on the customer discovery process and then delve deeper into how to conduct customer interviews and how to iterate on your business model canvas.
