Multidisciplinary discussion – Looking at municipal elections in Montreal through the lens of linguistic diversity

Wednesday, March 22, 2023 12:00to14:00
CIRM - 680 Sherbrooke West street, 8th floor, Montréal (Québec) H3A 2M7 Canada

On March 22, the CIRM invites you to a moment of discussion around the book Voting in Québec Municipal Elections: A tale of two cities (University of Toronto Press), co-edited by Éric Bélanger. An event organized in association with the Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship (CSCD) and McGill University’s Quebec Studies Program (QSP). Join Éric Bélanger (McGill), along with several speakers and guests, and among them Laura Stephenson our illustrious panelist and professor in political behaviour at Western University.

Voting in Quebec: A tale of two cities seeks to transform the state of research on municipal elections in Quebec through a systematic study of the 2017 elections in Montreal and Quebec City. Using data from the Canadian Municipal Elections Study, the authors demonstrate not only the importance of municipal politics in Quebec, but also the many ways in which research on municipal elections can help us better understand electoral behaviour in Quebec. This book examines characteristics specific to the local Quebec context, such as the importance of language and nationalism, the effects of local party labels on negative ballot races, and the role of ideology.

This event will take place in hybrid mode.
