In the Spring of 2015, duelling commentaries on the potential harms and benefits of heritable human genome editing were published in Nature and Science. Shortly thereafter, a science paper detailing the genetic modification of non-viable human embryos was published in Protein and Cell. Following on this, the First International Summit on Human Gene Editing was held in December 2015. Both somatic and germline genetic modification were on the agenda. Professor Baylis was a member of the Organizing Committee for this Summit. The Third International Summit will be held in March 2023. Coming on the heels of this Summit, this Medical Grand Rounds presentation will provide a summary overview of the ethical and policy issues spanning this approximate eight-year period (2015-2023) through the lens of three successive international meetings, with particular attention to the Closing Statement of the 2023 Summit.
