EMERGENCY ROOMS: CHAOTIC or HEROIC?
In this lecture, Dr. Peter Nugus will explore the inner workings of emergency rooms (ERs) from a unique perspective. His insights are drawn from thousands of hours of observations as an ethnographer in ERs in five different countries. The ER is a snapshot of the “wicked problems and tragic choices” of contemporary health care. The presentation exemplifies the competing priorities, tensions and politics that embroil ER health professionals. The ethical dilemmas and trade-offs we witness belong not only to the ER but reflect choices that emergency care poses for wider society. For anyone interested in our current health care system, particularly its future, this lecture on an insider’s perspective of the workings of the critical emergency services will be thought provoking and illuminating.
The emergency room has long suffered the sharp end of fragmented care in the broader health care system. An unintended consequence of COVID-19 has been to show how the flexibility of health care professionals and trainees, who have shifted or adapted to collaborative work on the frontlines, can stitch together coordinative mechanisms that are challenged by super-specialized medicine. Health care organizational and educational systems need to foster such creativity, flexibility, innovation, critical thinking and inter-professional collaboration, not only during pandemics but also for future routine care.
Presentation by Dr. Peter Nugus
Dr. Peter Nugus (MA Hons, MEd, PhD) is a sociologist and ethnographer, Acting Director of the McGill University Practice-Based Research Network, and Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Institute for Health Sciences Education at McGill University. Peter has held a Fulbright Fellowship at UCLA and an Australian-government Endeavour Fellowship at Columbia University, as well as having undertaken post-doctoral studies at the Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research. His research and teaching has focused on workplace and organizational learning, care coordination, culture and identity at work, and knowledge translation.
