Joseph To | Cantonese and Mandarin Choral Music

A Hong Kong Native, Joseph To graduated at the Washington State University with his Master of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music (Music Education with vocal emphasis) at the Washington State University. He studied choral conducting with Dr. Geoffrey Boers and Dr. Lori Wiest. As a conductor, Joseph has worked and studied with some internationally recognized conductors, such as Diane Wittry (USA), Kåre Hanken (Norway) and Helmuth Rilling (Germany).

Joseph is an experienced singer, and he has sung with some prolific choirs in the Pacific Northwest, including Chor Anno (Portland), Opus 7 (Seattle), and Seattle Symphony Chorale. He studied voice with Dr. Aaron Agulay and Thomas Harper. Along with UW Chamber Singers, he has performed in Carnegie Hall and ACDA Northwest regional conference in Portland.

A believer in music education, Joseph has had worked with all ages in many musical settings, from novice to professional. Joseph is interested in empowering multi-cultural music and promoting Chinese choral music. He was one of the presenters in the American Choral Directors Association Northwestern Regional Conference, Spokane, entitled “Learning Chinese Choral Music and Diction from a Native.” Currently, he is working on a catalogue of Chinese folksong arrangement for elementary schools and middle schools in the non-Chinese speaking country. 

Joseph is the director of music ministries at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and choral teacher at Tukwila School District, the most diverse school district in the United States.
