Geometric Group Theory Seminar: Daniel Wise. Gitik-Mitra-Rips-Sageev has proven that any quasiconvex subgroup of a word-hyperbolic group has finite width, and hence finite height. Prof. Wise will discuss proof of this result aimed towards a generalization. Joint work with Chris Hruska.
Christophe Reutenauer, UQAM. Christoffel words are a finitary version of sturmian sequences. They are related to continued fractions, discretization of lines in the plane and to combinatorics on words and palindromes. We give some elements of this theory, by stressing the geometric approach.
