As a young man in Poland, Michal Hornstein was arrested by the Nazis and set to be deported to Auschwitz, the notorious death camp where thousands were executed during the Holocaust.
But Hornstein evaded his captors by jumping from a train and hiding in the forests of Czechoslovakia. Of the 70 people who tried to escape the Nazis on that day in 1943, only seven survived.
Were it not for this twist of fate, it’s unlikely Hornstein would have survived the war, immigrated to Canada and become one of the city’s most renowned philanthropists.

Less than a year ago Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc.’s CEO Michael Pearson represented a disruption to big pharma by coming from outside the industry, using aggressive acquisitions and strategic business tactics to grow the company to a global giant.
Now the company has hired Joseph Papa as the new CEO, a 35-year pharmaceutical industry veteran with a history of taking a balanced approach to business. If the past few months of Pearson’s tenure can be described as rocky road, Papa could help bring a new flavour to Valeant.
According to Jui Ramaprasad, an assistant professor in the Desautels Faculty of Management, digital dating can be remarkably – and dishearteningly – similar to off-line interfacing.
“We still see these off-line social norms. Our results are derived from the idea men make the first move and that women leave this weak signal. It was more than surprising, it was disappointing – you would have hoped we have evolved beyond that.”
