Philippe Schmitter, European University Institute, Florence. Prof. Schmitter's earlier work was on regional integration, interest intermediation, corporatism and transitions from authoritarian rule, especially in Latin America. More recently, he has been interested in conceptualizing democracy in the case of the European Union ("How to Democratize the European Union – and why bother," 2000) and in reassessing neo-functionalist theory ("Neo-neofunctionalism" in A. Weiner & T. Diez, European Integration Theory, Oxford, 2004).
Dr. Roy Lyster will launch his new book, "Learning and Teaching Languages Through Content - A Counterbalanced Approach." Wine and cheese will be served. Reviewers have said this book "should be compulsory reading for anyone interested in language learning in content-based second language contexts."
