Teaching practices could play an important role in preventing bullying

Relationship between teachers and students can be crucial, especially for boys, study finds
Tue, 2017-05-23 13:58

Classrooms that encourage competition between students may inadvertently be creating settings where bullying is more likely to take place. That’s one of the conclusions that can be drawn from work led by McGill University researchers Maria Di Stasio and Robert Savage, who recently published a paper on the subject in the Journal of Adolescence. But it’s only part of the story.

How Montreal aims to become a world centre of artificial intelligence

Tue, 2017-05-23 10:29

U de M and McGill University are the academic bedrocks on which Montreal’s AI sector has been built. About 150 AI researchers toil at the two institutions, making the city one of the world’s largest basic deep learning centres. “We stuck to academia, which helped us build big labs with a lot of graduate students,” said Doina Precup, associate professor in computer sciences at McGill and recipient of a Google research award.

Dobson Cup winners turn food waste into gourmet mushrooms

Tue, 2017-05-23 10:16

Myco-Rise is a Montreal-area startup that uses food waste and vermicomposting to grow gourmet mushrooms for local restaurants and individuals.

The company definitely marches to its own drum: while other startup founders might dream of geographical expansion right out of the gate, Myco-Rise is consolidating its position as a Montreal-specific mushroom supplier, planning instead to expand into modular production, medicinal mushrooms, and maybe even mushroom beer.
