Congratulations to McGill School of Information Studies PhD student Fei Shu on receiving a FRQSC Doctoral Fellowship.

Fei’s research investigates the difference between Web of Science and local Chinese bibliometric databases and contributes to understanding of whether international bibliometric databases can be used to evaluate national research performance.

Fei's supervisors are Dr. Charles-Antoine Julien and Dr. Vincent Larivière, EBSI, UdeM.

An outbreak of an intestinal parasite common in the tropics, known as Cryptosporidium, has been identified for the first time in the Arctic. The discovery was made in Nunavik, Quebec, by a team from the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), in collaboration with the Nunavik Department of Public Health, Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec and Health Canada. The discovery, which was documented in the journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, could have long-term implications for the health of children in Nunavik and Nunavut’s communities.

Researchers in Canada have found that a gene called 'OSMR' plays a key role in driving the growth of glioblastoma tumours. The more active the gene is, the shorter the patient's life span, the study suggests. Doctor Arezu Jahani-Asl, assistant professor of medicine at McGill University and a neuroscientist at the Jewish General Hospital's Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research in Canada, led the research.
