Conference-experiment on DIY urbanism

Wednesday, October 31, 2018 14:00to16:00
Hôtel-Dieu, 3840, Saint-Urbain St., Montréal, QC, H2W 1T6, CA

On October 31st, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., CIRM welcomes Gordon Douglas, Director of San José State University's Institute for Metropolitan Studies and multidisciplinary urbanist. The meeting point is set at Hôtel-Dieu, 3840 Saint-Urbain St. (see on the map).

Gordon Douglas questions the relationship between citizens, the places around them, and the social inequalities that urban development and planning sometimes imply. Following his most recent publication, The Help - Yourself City. Legitimacy and Inequality in DIY Urbanism, the conference-experiment invites you to discover the ways in which citizens and researchers take action in Montréal to develop the urban space and respond to community priorities and the lack of municipal services.

Gordon Douglas's presentation on DIY urbanism will be highlighted by a visit of the Milton/Parc sector and interventions by Montreal stakeholders including the Centre d’écologie urbaine de Montréal, the Comité des citoyennes et citoyens Milton ParcJaimie Cudmore (CIRM's BMO Doctoral Scholar) and Geoffrey Bush (Coalition vélo de Montréal).
