CIRM brings together researchers whose interests are connected to Montréal. Its mission is: 1) to stimulate emerging research in Montréal studies and to unite the research being conducted within various disciplines and universities; 2) to develop partnerships, sets of themes, and fundamental and applied research projects on the economic, social, cultural and governmental spheres of Montréal.

Fellowship value and duration

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship in Montréal Studies: $30,000$[1]
  • Research budget: $3,000$[2]

  • The duration of the fellowship ranges from 8 months - depending on the public health context and authorization by the Direction de santé publique, the fellowship recipient will have the option of having a workspace in the CIRM offices, located at 680 Sherbrooke Street West, 8th floor, in Montréal. 

 

Conditions

  1. The candidates must:
    • be either Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have the appropriate visa;
    • be registered or committed to registering full-time in a Quebec university;
    • be supervised by a regular or associate CIRM member.
  2. The submitted projects must deal in whole or in part (comparative research is accepted) with Montréal and intersect with at least one of CIRM’s six research-action axes.
  3. Applications must be written in English or in French and be sent electronically, as a single PDF document, to CIRM’s pascal.brissette [at] mcgill.ca (Director), nik.luka [at] mcgill.ca (Associate Director), and assunta.fiorita [at] mcgill.ca (Administrative Supervisor) before November 15, 2023 at 5 p.m. (Montréal time).
  4. Fellowship recipients are expected to participate in CIRM’s work during the duration of the award. The terms of this participation can be discussed with the Centre’s director and coordinators.
  5. Candidates must have received their doctorate in 2018 or later.
  6. Candidates must have sufficient knowledge of the French language or be willing to take courses once in office through McGill University’s French Language Centre.
  7. The accumulation of awards with those from large funding organizations, or others, is permitted.

 

Selection

  • Application deadline: November 15, 2023 at 5 p.m. (Montréal time);
  • Evaluation of applications and, if applicable, interviews with finalists: between November 27 and December 1st, 2023;
  • Results announcement: December 7, 2023 at the latest;
  • Fellowships are awarded by a jury composed of members of CIRM’s Executive Committee who have not endorsed an application.

 

Content of the application

  • Letter of intent, in which are specified the applicant’s CIRM-affiliated supervisor, the home university, and the anticipated contribution to the work at CIRM;
  • Description of the research project (maximum 3 single-spaced pages);
  • Resume (university studies, publications, awards, relevant experiences and work);
  • Copy of transcripts (graduate studies only);
  • Confirmation of doctoral defence in the event that the diploma is in the process of being obtained;
  • Evaluation reports of thesis jury members; 
  • 1 letter of recommendation (directly sent to pascal.brissette [at] mcgill.ca (CIRM’s Director), nik.luka [at] mcgill.ca (Associate Director) and assunta.fiorita [at] mcgill.ca (Administrative Supervisor) by those writing them);
  • 1 letter from the supervisor confirming the research collaboration.

Evaluation criteria

  • Academic performance
  • Relevance of the research proposal with regard to CIRM’s mission, research-action axes and structuring projects;
  • Appeal of the anticipated contribution to CIRM’s work and activities;
  • Confirmed interest and ability in interdisciplinary and intersectoral work as well as teamwork;
  • Leadership and community engagement.

Submission and defence of the thesis prior to the application’s deadline is an asset.
