Addressing Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Women:  A One-Fits-All Approach?

One in three women die of ischemic heart disease or stroke. Yet most women remain unaware of the risks they face: they are under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-researched.

Overall Learning Objectives for the Activity:

To understand the differences and similarities of cardiovascular disease risk factors between women and men across the lifespan

Learning Objectives for Specific Sessions:

  • Summarize the sex and gender differences in epidemiology and importance of cardiovascular disease risk factors
  • Outline a sex specific approach to hypertension management 
  • Identify the impact of diabetes on cardiovascular disease risk in women
  • Explain preconception cardiovascular disease risk factor management 
  • Relate sex specific differences in obesity and physical activity 
  • Describe factors in early primary prevention in women
  • Illustrate a patient centered approach in cardiovascular disease primary prevention

Target audience: GP’s, internists, medical students & residents, nurses, allied healthcare professionals
