Resilience, Renewal, and Sustainability

2000–Today

From 2000 onward, the department continued to expand research and adapt to new challenges.

  • Under Professors Robert Kok, Shiv Prasher, and Valérie Orsat, the department strengthened its online presence, improved recruitment, and achieved gender parity in undergraduate enrollment.
  • New hires, including Drs. Valérie Orsat, Michael Ngadi, Grant Clark, Mark Lefsrud, and Viacheslav Adamchuk, broadened expertise in food engineering, composting, greenhouse technologies, and precision agriculture.
  • Drs. Jan Adamowski, Zhiming Qi, Marie-Josée Dumont, Abdolhamid Akbarzadeh Shafaroud, Shangpeng Sun, Ebenezer Miezah Kwofie, and Idaresit Ekaette further expanded the department into areas like hydrology, biomass-based materials, robotics, and AI-driven agriculture.

Professor Adamchuk, as Chair since 2018, guided the department through the COVID-19 pandemic and major renovations of the Technical Services and Macdonald–Stewart buildings.

Today, the Department of Bioresource Engineering builds on its century-long legacy—bridging technology and sustainability to shape the future of agriculture, food systems, and the environment.
