Update on Faculty of Arts' operations during red alert status: October 9, 2020

Published: 9 October 2020

Dear members of the Arts community,

Earlier this week, Deputy Provost (Student Life and Learning) Fabrice Labeau sent a message to the McGill community regarding the restrictions that will affect universities in red alert zones, such as Montreal. These restrictions to McGill's operational status came into force yesterday and will remain in place until October 28, 2020. I want to take this time to underscore how these restrictions will specifically impact the Faculty of Arts.

Teaching & Learning Activities

All the Faculty of Arts’ in-person teaching activities will end until further notice.

For faculty members who believe they have a legitimate need to come onto campus during the restricted period, please contact your department chair for approval.

Student Services

All Faculty of Arts’ student services (including OASIS advising) will be carried out remotely during the restricted period.

Research Activities

On-campus research activities that cannot be conducted remotely and were previously approved by Associate Dean Tabitha Sparks can continue.

However, any in-person research is not allowed on campus, and it is not allowed off campus if the research takes place in a red zone OR if it is necessary to travel between regions to conduct this research.

As we move into the Thanksgiving weekend, please remember that the Quebec government is strongly discouraging travel between regions in Quebec or outside of Quebec. Although it is difficult for many of us to be away from loved ones during this time, your cooperation and respect of the restrictions in place are crucial to ensuring the health and safety of all of us.

Sincerely,

Antonia Maioni
Dean of Arts
